Serbian men’s basketball player Simanic has a kidney removed due to an elbow injury
Serbian men’s basketball player Simanic was forced to undergo a kidney removal surgery after suffering an elbow injury during the group stage match against South Sudan, Serbian media outlet Telegraf.rs reported.
According to the information previously revealed by the head coach of the Serbian men’s basketball team, Simanic was sent to a hospital in Manila after the injury, but it was difficult to find a suitable blood supply, and the kidney was already malfunctioning at that time.
Simanic is 25 years old, 2 meters 11 tall, is the main forward of the Serbian national team. In the group stage match against South Sudan, he was elbowed by South Sudanese player Omot, resulting in kidney injury.
What happened to Simanic is saddening. He was originally the hopeful star of the Serbian men’s basketball team, but because of the accidental injury, he had to withdraw from this World Cup and underwent a kidney removal surgery.
Simanic’s injury has also raised concerns about the safety of basketball. Physical collisions between players are inevitable during intense games, but player safety should be guaranteed.
The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) should step up its supervision of game safety and set stricter rules to protect players’ health.
